Life is to be taken easy – but played hard
by
“Life wasn’t meant to be Easy…” uttered Malcolm Fraser and this iconic phrase has become Australian folklore.
Politicians are famous for telling people what they want to hear and this was another opportunity for Malcolm Fraser to get more brownie points. What he should have said was “Life is easy – it is just not meant to be”. This is a lot closer to the truth – but it is not what we want to hear.
Every day we face challenges and battles are to be fought on all fronts. It certainly does not seem easy for most Australians. So we loved it when Fraser echoed our feelings.
Every Sunday, I hang in with the A grade bunch and I can tell you that it is not easy there. I certainly have the option of racing a lower grade and having an easier ride – but I don’t do it.
Every day, I wake up and go flat out running my roofing business. It is hard work running your own business. I could just get an easy job – or even go into semi-retirement. Yet, I refuse to take these easy options.
But life itself is easy. It is so easy that some people complain that it is too short. Life only has three parts.
- We are born
- We play the game of Life
- We die
Life goes on – whether we like it or not. We breathe without thinking about it. Our hearts pump blood automatically. We could just take a whole day off and do nothing… and the world restarts for us tomorrow. We just continue where we left off.
And life goes on whether we are here or not. We like to feel important and that the whole world revolves around us. If we don’t do all these things, the world would collapse. But if you suddenly died, nothing much happens to the world at large.
The most important thing about life is that it is a game. And when we are in a game, we like to play it hard (just who likes to watch a game where the players are all taking it easy?).
If we took life for what it really is – it would be boring. It is too easy.
That is why we do all sorts of things to make it hard. That is why I still race A grade. That is why I will never retire from business. That is why I still push my limits – even though it seems so painful.
Life is easy. It is just not meant to be so because it is a game…..and games are meant to be played HARD.
